About CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) Permits

Carrying a concealed weapon (CCW) is a serious responsibility that requires training, accountability, and legal approval. A CCW permit allows qualified individuals to carry a concealed handgun in public, either on their person or in close proximity.

There are no federal laws governing the issuance of CCW permits; they are handled at the state or local level. While all 50 states allow some form of concealed carry, the specific requirements vary. Some states issue permits, while others do not require one at all.

In San Diego County, CCW permits are issued by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Applicants must:

• Submit their application online.
• Pass a thorough background check.
• Receive approval from the Licensing Division.
• Only then, after approval may they attend the required California CCW training classes.

Important Training Requirement Update (CA SB2)

Effective January 1, 2024, California Senate Bill 2 (SB2) increases required training hours for CCW applicants:

• Initial Applicants: Increased from 8 to 16 hours
• All Renewal Applicants: Increased to 8 hours

However, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office has determined that:

• Any initial application submitted on or before December 31, 2023 qualifies under the previous lower-hour training requirements for the initial class.
• You can verify your application date on Page 3 of your application where you signed and certified.

Even if your interview or approval letter is dated after January 1, 2024, your training requirement will follow the submission date.

Note on Terminology

Different states use different terms for concealed carry permits:

• CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon)
• CHL/CHP (Concealed Handgun License/Permit)
• CWP/CWL (Concealed Weapon Permit/License)
• LTC/LTCF (License to Carry Firearm)
• CPL (Concealed Pistol License), etc.
  Thirteen states issue a single permit that covers both open and concealed carry.
